The existence of higher education in the Bosansko-Podrinjski Canton is linked to the year 2014 in the city of Goražde, when the International University of Goražde (now the American Northwest University of Health Science and Technology) was established and received permission to operate from the relevant educational authority. Since that year, the University has developed and continuously progressed. Today, it has 4 faculties with 15 different programs.

The University is an educational and scientific higher education institution established by private capital. It has been founded in accordance with the Framework Law on Higher Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Official Gazette of Bosnia and Herzegovina, number 59/07) and the Law on Higher Education of the Bosnian Podrinje Canton Goražde (Official Gazette of the Bosnian Podrinje Canton, number 2/10 and 12/14). The Ministry of Education, Youth, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Bosnian Podrinje Canton Goražde issued the Approval for Operation – License number 10-38-2437-7/14 on September 24, 2014, which established academic studies. The organization of the International University in Goražde is defined by the University Statute, as well as the bodies of the University and the bodies of the faculties. Depending on the educational-scientific and pedagogical requirements, as well as on the scope and type of work, the University has established different types of organizational units within its framework, namely: organizational units for the implementation of educational activities. The University organizes faculties, institutes, etc., for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies. The organizational units do not have the status of legal entities. Organizational units for the implementation of educational activities operate in legal transactions under the common name of the University with the addition of the faculty’s name. At the University, the following are organized: the Rectorate and Professional Services.
